Andúnië

“Andúnië”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: Andúnië was a haven (harbour city) located on the west coast of Númenor. There the ships of the Eldar of Tol Eressëa would most often land in the early days of Númenor. Its name means ‘sunset’ in Quenya.

Despite the fact that Andúnië was originally Númenor’s most important city, as the Shadow was falling over Númenor, Armenelos became larger and more important. Towards the end of the realm, the remaining Faithful were labelled as dissidents by the King’s Men, with many having been deported to Rómenna and other eastern regions, including the heirs of the former Lords.

In this painting, I’ve tried to capture Andúnië during her troubled years…as a haven for the Faithful, if no longer for the Elven ships.
