“Riddles in the Dark”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday bewildered among the bunkers, pits, and chasms that riddle the roots of the Misty Mountains. Carved over the eons by floodwaters seeping from miles above, the myriad underground mazes threatened to rend my reason; I was sure I was soon to be sundered forever from the sunlit world.

But just as I began to despair, I heard voices wafting from a tunnel ahead of me. I crept down the shaft, feeling my way, until I came to the edge of an underground lake. There, by some dim phosphorescence of the water itself, I descried two creatures on the shore: one a halfling, and the other of similar size, but of a frightening mien. I kept still and listened, and to my surprise found that they were playing a game of riddles. I did not remain, but, encouraged by this unlooked-for sign of life, I retraced my steps and continued my quest for an exit from this desolate realm.

    We wants it!

This is great Jef. There are so many versions of this scene that exist on canvas, but no other has the vibrancy of color like this one. Well done!
