“The Arkenstone

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary:

I spent Saturday with the Elves and men of Laketown. We were camped among the ruins of Dale, near the great gaping arch that leads into the desolate mountain kingdom of Erebor. Night fell, and I remained among the folk of Thranduil, wrapped in my cloak, and listening to the counsels of the Wise. But well before midnight, a commotion arose without the tent, and guards came leading in a small hooded figure. He entered the circle of the candlelight and declared himself to be one of the companions of Thorin and the dwarves who yet held the vast treasure of the vanquished dragon against the hosts of the people of Thranduil and of Bard.

The Hobbit spoke, and then drew from his pockets a small sphere that instantly blazed in the lamplight. Rainbows of colour glinted from its blue-white heart, and all who saw it gasped. It was, of course, the very heart of the mountain and of Thorin Oakenshield: the Arkenstone itself. And there were none among us who could tell which was the greater marvel: the brilliant gem, or the noble and worthy heart of the one who offered it.
