Artist Commentary:

I spent Saturday on the Greenway, south of Bree. I had been traveling for many days, and had begun my journey near the ruined bridge at Tharbad. From there I trekked northward, ever mindful of the movement in these quiet lands of strange folk, sightings of whom had recently been all the talk at the Prancing Pony.

I halted early on Midsummer’s morning (for the seasons flow differently in Eriador than in our own world) as I approached Bree, and I set up my easel at the edge of the road. The plain was golden-lit in the morning sunlight, and long shadows fell between the spot I had chosen and the hillside town in the distance.

Ere long I heard footsteps and the voice of someone humming a tune as he strode up the Greenway from the south. At nearly the same time, a horse and rider came from Bree along the road, and these two travelers met near where I was painting.

Older men they appeared to be, and yet with all the vigour of youth. One was clad in brown and the other grey, and it was clear that theirs was an urgent business, for ere long the one remounted his horse and headed east, while the other hastened his steps northward towards Bree. I did not eavesdrop upon their conversation, but I could not help but wonder if their business touched on the evil tidings I had heard of late.

Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday in the Shire, visiting with old friends and meeting new ones. As evening approached, I went up the Hill and knocked at the familiar round door. It opened, and I was ushered in to share in a good supper, laughter, and cheer. We did not tarry late at table, for the day had been wearying for us all, so off we trundled to soft bolsters on four-poster beds; in my own case, a trifle snug, but ample enough and comfortable enough for one who is not among the largest of the Big Folk.

But in the night, I awoke. I was disoriented for a time, and I could hear no noise; the fire had died back in my room. But I soon saw the flicker of flame in the hallway, and heard the clock in the distant parlour strike three. So I arose to see who could be up so late. I peeked down the hall and saw that the light came from the young halfling’s library. I crept to the doorway and glanced inside; there he sat, the new Lord of these halls, in his most comfortable chair. The library itself was piled to the ceiling with books, folios, maps, and trinkets. A few candles were lit and a fire burned merrily in the grate beside him.

In his lap lay a book, bound in green with gilt lettering, that he must have been reading; but now it simply rested upon his knee, unheeded. Where his thoughts had strayed, I could not tell, but he was staring into space. Perhaps he was reflecting upon some future adventure, I supposed, or trying out, in his head, lines of some poem that had come to him, unbidden, riding on the wild currents of eventide. But I did not disturb him; rather, I left him to his dreams and fireside journeys, and returned to my bed to seek my own.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday above the gorge of Bruinen, along the western slopes of Karningul. The purple peaks of the Misty Mountains loomed in the late morning, and the soft light of autumn filtered crystalline through turquoise skies. I set up my easel on the curved path, beside ivy-strewn balusters, and sought to capture the rich cadmium golds and reds of the trees below.

While I worked, two halflings approached from the Last Homely House: one young, cloaked, and raven-haired, and the other older, sporting a red velvet coat and steadying himself with his ebony cane. They barely noticed me as they passed by, so deep were they in conversation about their home in the far flung lands westward.

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: Saturday at dawn I hiked the western shores of Nen Hithoel, wending my way southward toward the triple peaks that crown the falls of Rauros. Upon the green sward of Parth Galen, I paused to admire Tol Brandir’s hewn heights, when suddenly a huntsman’s horn sounded from the forest behind me. Urgent came that call, and I dropped my gear and sprang up the sylvan slopes of Amon Hen to render what aid I might.

The winding of the horn ceased, but I ran on, coming at last upon a glade littered with the lifeless bodies of orcs. But propped against a tree, on the edge of the clearing, I descried the huntsman, motionless, seated on the ground with broken sword still clasped in his mighty hand. He was pierced with many arrows, and beside him knelt a cloaked companion. I stood in silence before these two great men: the one having been released from all suffering; the other with head bowed in sorrow and hands clasped before him in the still, golden light of morning.

Artist Commentary:I spent Saturday east of Anduin, beneath the eaves of Greenwood the Great. I came upon a thorny hedge and knew it for the bounds of Beorn’s realm. And as I passed through the wooden gate, I noticed stormy skies in the west, and calamitous clouds rising. Quickly, with golden afternoon light leaping across the lawn, I primed my palette and, heavens heaving above me, sketched the skin-changer’s home in cadmiums and cobalt.

As I painted, I was startled by the sight of a tall old man and a halfling coming through the gate; they gave me greetings and passed me by, proceeding along the lane and through the ripening corn. The Mage pointed out the distant hall to the pensive Hobbit, then they both vanished among the billowing gilded tassles.

Artist Commentary:I spent an unsettled Saturday traveling the Great East Road, among the wild and tangled woods that climb ever upward toward the Misty Mountains. Halting Brego in the Trollshaws, many leagues west of Bruinen, I spied a prospect opening upon the northern marches; here I beheld a glimmering lake on which played sunbeams that smote the moody scape. And while clouds churned and thunders threatened, I hastened to set up my easel and sketch the scene.

But just as storms most threatened, I perceived a light in the west and heard the thunder of horse’s hooves upon the road. I sought shelter, but none was to be had. Yet, just as I feared the worst, one of the Fair Folk galloped into view on a great white steed. Tall, he was, yet fell, with power in his hand, and he merely nodded as he fled yet eastward on some grave errand. But in his passing, the gloom was vanquished. Golden light poured upon the road and pursued him; and in his wake I perceived a chiming of bells and a quickening of the air, as if all of these wild realms had been cleansed by his passing.

Artist Commentary:I spent Saturday in the Green Hill Country, near Wood Hall. Day dawned drab and dull, with high clouds and mists abounding. But skies soon brightened, and I hiked the hills and pitched my palette at forest’s edge. At teatime, I heard voices, and was joined on the ridge by a halfling and one of the Big Folk. They tarried, and the doughty doyen perched on the trunk of a felled oak tree and blew smoke rings across the wooded valley below us. After an hour, the companions continued on their way, fading off into the folds of the hazy afternoon hills while I my pigments plied.

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary:I awoke Saturday in the crisp predawn hours and at first knew not where I lay. But morning’s chill reminded me; I had vowed to paint the Imladris pass at daybreak, and so had camped in the high places that hem the blessed vale. I threw back my cloak and beheld the stars fading in the east; then, with numbed hands, I prepared palette and canvas. The first roseate rays were rising above the peaks when up from the valley rode two pilgrims on the path: a tall old man with a cloak and pointed grey hat mounted on a great white steed, and beside him, what appeared to be a tow-headed youth riding a pony. They greeted me heartily as they passed, the glory of dawn now rendering all of the mists of the new spring day in swirls of cobalt, violet, and gold.

Artist Commentary:I spent Saturday among the Weather Hills, east of Bree. Autumnal leaves lingered in the wild, and I hiked the hills seeking for Amon Sûl. In mid-morning I mounted a hillock and beheld the blanched ruins in crystalline morning light. I set up my easel and began to paint. Ere long, a rustling sounded from the tall grass behind me, and a ranger and a Hobbit appeared. They stood before me, surveying the remains of the watchtower, and then descended the hill to join their companions. I watched them all continue on their way, and a chill of foreboding came to me, despite the warmth of the sun and the aching beauty of the wild heaths.
