Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday near the eastern gate of Khazad-dûm. I had come there at the urgings of the folk of the Golden Wood, to watch for travelers that might be passing through that perilous realm. The gates are guarded, but of a sudden I saw the sentries — fell orcs visible only as shadows within the cavernous mouth of the gate — disappear. Curious, I crept to the gate and, staying close to the walls, followed movements inward. A reddish glow grew brighter as I passed, and soon before me I could see a great stone bridge. Tiny figures were running across the bridge toward me, and I could readily see why; behind them came crowds of orcs, and in their midst, a great maned creature with a flaming sword. This demon of the deeps approached the stone span, shadow and flame-clad, and I feared for the lives of us all.
