Artist Commentary:

I spent Saturday hiking through the Old Forest. I had come from the downs and had passed Bombadil’s house and followed the dancing waters of the Withywindle into the wild woods, knowing that this path, at least, would not lead me astray. But caution is always required in such a wild land, especially when its Master is far afield.

But, by midday I had encountered nothing more ominous than the occasional sleepy root popping up without warning to snag me. The woods were watchful, it seemed, but not terribly interested in me. Thus I came at last to the deepest part of the forest, where the river flowed broadly among the willows. The light was golden as the afternoon came on, and it was

I set up my easel and began a painting of Old Man Willow from a distance; he does not care for company in general, and I knew not to disturb him. But ere long I saw movement along the shore, and four of the little folk appeared leading ponies. I could not imagine how they could have gotten so deep within the forest with no path to follow, but I continued painting, almost without noticing that one of them was sitting on one of Old Man Willow’s knees, cooling his feet in the river waters. I thought to warn him of his peril, but it was too late….
