“At the Foot of the Meneltarma”
Oil on canvas, 10″x16″ wide.
Artist Commentary: Meneltarma, meaning Pillar of the Heavens, was a sacred mountain in the centre of Númenor. At its summit, the King of Númenor uttered prayers of thanksgiving to Eru Ilúvatar. Although no permanent structures were built at its summit, in this image I’ve placed a pavilion on its upper slope…a place of gathering prior to ascent of the mountain itself. In the distance, the Evening Star is seen as the sun sets in the west. This image was originally published in Mallorn No. 42 in August, 2004.
