Fledgling”

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday traveling the remote wilds, many leagues west of the Great Waterfall and the cauldron pool. As the morning sun soared in a cerulean sky, I traversed forests and splendid grassy glades, and hiked the hills of divers downs. Then, near noon, I came upon a garden in a fair glen, walled about with green turves; in its eastern wall were set a pair of gates fashioned of purest gold.

Words in silver were blazoned upon those gates, but ere I could read them, a shadow passed over me. I looked aloft and spied a most astonishing sight: a winged horse, round the neck of which clung two children. This beatific being descended, and the boy and girl tumbled upon the grass. But I sensed that some solemn quest pressed upon the three, so I did not attempt to discover their errand. Instead, I turned to retrace my steps, seeking, if I might, to come nearer once more to the borders of Narnia ere nightfall.

The End of All Things

The End of All Things”

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: Tidings fell befell me Saturday. Hearkening in the heaths, I sensed some wickedness wending through the woods. Dark seemed the dreams of the all the quick and the dead, as if some devilish doom bore down upon us all.

I packed easel and palette, and Brego and I passed lightly over the empty downs and onward to the Lantern Waste. There we paused, and Brego sniffed the spring air and shivered. But where we had halted, a flower-strewn glen glimmered in golden light, and I strove to cheer my spirits by sketching the sylvan scene.

Yet, I could not dislodge my disquiet, and ere long two figures appeared on the edges of the glade: a kingly knight and a white unicorn, who passed silently beneath the dappled boughs. Such a sight should have salved the saddest soul, but it was not to be. The twain appeared aggrieved and sickened in spirit, and I knew, as they passed us by, that they trod a fearsome and lonely path: toward what fate, I knew not.

Across the Desert

“Across the Desert”

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday south of Archenland, in the bosom of the Great Desert. The sky crackled with darkling clouds, high-riding, and Brego and I strove ever southward ’til naught but sand dunes roiling stretched as far as eye could see. Once the sun began to sink, we halted, and I set up my easel and began rendering the siennas and cadmiums of the pleated plain. The riot of earthen hues was pocked by pitchy-purple storm clouds through which the sun’s rays peeked.

Then, with Helios hovering just above the horizon, I saw faint figures shimmering in the distance, and ere long a dappled horse hiked the nearest dune, bearing on his back a boy in blue. Another horse and rider followed, but I quickly strove to paint this first pair into my canvas as the last golden lights were quenching.

Reciting the Signs

Reciting the Signs”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: Saturday morning I awoke to find the walls of my bedroom vanished, replaced with roseate clouds and golden gossamer summer breezes. I sat up, flung away sheets and stepped into a crystalline dawn. Strolling through lush woodlands, I soon found myself at the brink of cliffs that felt as though they stood on the edge of forever. I breathed amethyst air, and in time a maiden and a lion came to the cliff’s edge. But I felt fearful that my presence might disturb them, so I turned and strode away, intent on exploring the glorious land that lay to the East….
