The old man sat down opposite the boy. His hair and beard were gray and he passed his hand across his brow as one whose recollections
require the touch of flesh to refresh them.
“I shall tell you the tale of Linya. She was a lesser ring; never one of the Great,” he began. “She was wrought of plain silver, and her stone was of sapphire. But her jewel reflected the very colour of the ocean’s abyss — the deepest aquamarine blue — and her power, like that of water itself, was fluid and changeable; it varied with each new master….”
