“Echoes on the Road“
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.
Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday in the Green Hill country in the East Farthing. It was late in the day when I came to a stretch of road where the forest thickened; there the autumn colours were bright and cheerful in the afternoon light, and the birds sang merrily. I set up my easel beside an ancient oak tree and began to paint.
Before long, I heard happy voices, and soon three of the Small Folk appeared, packs on their backs, hiking east toward Stock and Woodhall; they greeted me warmly as they approached. But just ere they passed by, one of them turned around and listened. In a few moments we all heard them: echoes on the road — the clip clop of a horse’s hooves.
The Hobbits became anxious and they quickly hurried east. I likewise felt uneasy, so I hid myself behind the oak
tree and waited. Soon a cloaked man on a black steed passed by slowly, as if searching for someone in the woods. I held my breath as he passed, and he quickly vanished into the shadows of the eastern road. It was only then that I noticed the silence; all of the birds had likewise been affected by the passing of this apparition, and the were now hushed in the dwindling afternoon light.
