The Knighting of Gimli

14_03_519_Knighting_of_gimli_enh_800

“The Knighting of Gimli

Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday morning in the glistering glades of Dwimordene. In her western copses and thickets, the light drifted lazily down from the lush canopy overhead, painting cleft treetrunks with high hues of violet and alizarin. The gnarly oaks and rocky scree lands east of Moria were here made merry by mists from the laughing waters of the Silverlode.

Amid my wanderings, I came upon a small stand of ancient trees that had grown tall and proud over the dew-laden march of the centuries. And here I came upon two who could not have appeared more different: a swarthy dwarf garbed in crimson and gold, and a tall elven queen in white. They spoke in hushed tones, and as I watched, the dwarf bowed low to the woman and kneeled before her. She unsheathed her sword, tapped each of his shoulders lightly, and then bid him arise.

Never in all the lands of the Free Folk had I witnessed such a thing; the very moment when two peoples, deeply divided, redressed their past grievances and acknowledged their love and need for one another. Deeply moved, I left the two fast friends; I turned back toward the river, renewed and hope-filled as I strode the glimmering glens
of the Golden Wood.

“La Belle et la Bête

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: The Beast received  Beauty graciously and informed her that she is now mistress of the castle, and he is her servant. He gave her lavish clothing and food and carries on lengthy conversations with her. Every night, the Beast asked Belle to marry him, only to be refused each time. After each refusal, Belle dreamt of a handsome prince who pleaded with her to answer why she keeps refusing him, to which she replied that she cannot marry the Beast because she loves him only as a friend….
