Piper of Dreams

14_01_517_Piper_of_dreams_enh2_800 “Piper of Dreams

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: This Saturday, I found myself wandering the woods on a glorious late summer’s afternoon. The gilded light of September embraced the mighty oaks and willows, and upon clearing a rise in the forest, I beheld all of the Great River spread out before me. Here among the gentle swellings of this happy land, the waters ran in lazy loops, and islets of grass, fen, and bush burst forth from the distant shallows.

Against this idyll, I perceived a young boy, barefoot, resting against an ancient gnarled oak tree. He was playing a sweet air on a tin whistle, a tune that I could not place: yet it seemed of a piece with the caressing, careless breezes of the River. And as I watched and listened to this haunting tune, I descried, flickering about the child’s curly locks, faint figures that hovered, swooped, and pirouetted in the failing golden light. Magical they seemed, and joy-filled!

Time ceased as I breathed in the perfumed air of forest and fen, hypnotized by the diaphanous creatures dancing about the boy. In my mind, I was among them, following in flight the pulse of that gentle but ancient melody. But then, with one final note from The Piper and one last glimmer of gold from the setting sun, the spell was broken…and I awoke.

A Canticle for Elessar

“A Canticle for Elessar

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday morning along the Celebrant, hiking the forests that flank the river as it courses from Kheled-zâram. The early dawn was mist-filled, but shafts of sunlight winked in and out of the woodlands, spangling with gold and vermillion the leaf-strewn forest floor.

In-mid morning I approached the boundaries of fair Caras Galadhon, and there descried a glade within which grew a beautiful but ancient oak tree. Its crimson and cadmium leaves were oddly somber in the quiet of the dayspring. But beneath the tree sat a beautiful woman in silver, cradling in her arms a
bouquet of Easter lillies, and high above her, among the branches, a golden eagle perched, vigilant, as if guarding her during her meditations.

I knew not why, but I felt I could not trespass on her solitude, so I turned to go. But just then, through some trick of the sunlight and the mist, it seemed to me that I descried a tall man standing behind the woman, his hands resting upon her shoulders. Great and fell he appeared in gilded armour, yet his healing hands were gentle and comforting. I knew not whence came this spirit, but I perceived that the communion of these two souls was sacred, so I left the glade in silence.
