In the Emperor’s Palace

13_11_514_In_the_emperors_palace_enh_800 “In the Emperor’s Palace

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary:

On Saturday I dreamt that I stood in a palace above the sea, overlooking waters that rippled gently in a summer breeze. Jade and emerald waves lapped lazily at the palace steps, and their colour was mirrored in a sky awash in delicate pink clouds. Away to the east the dawn was breaking, and as I breathed the fragrant air, I was reminded of a golden morn when I was yet a child and the world itself was young.

I leaned against a pillar as the sun, indescribably large, poured its light into the palace. And while I stood transfixed, I glimpsed a
great lion nearby. His golden mane sparkled in the dawn, and he was attended by an old man in grey, cloaked, and leaning upon a wooden staff. It was clear that these were old friends, overjoyed to find themselves once more in the Emperor’s palace. And, although I sought not to listen, nevertheless their voices floated through the sunlit air like the notes of some great symphony; the gentle tones of the old wizard a counterpoint to the rumblings, like thunder, of the great lion king.

All Souls’ Day

13_11_513_All_souls_day_enh_800

“All Souls’ Day

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent All Souls Day in the Dagorlad, east of the Emyn Muil. The Dead Marshes are bleak at all times, yet one can find a subtle beauty in those wetlands — at least, during the daylight hours.

I set up my easel near the end of a faint path, among the tussocks and plumed grasses of the previous autumn. Spring was coming to Middle-earth, but little sign of it could be found in the subdued hues of earth and winding water. But after sketching the purples and greens of reeds, low clouds, creeks and ponds, I took a rest on a dry bed of grass, lulled by the mournful cries of rail and bittern.

I dozed off, and when I awoke, evening was setting in. I had stayed too late, and could see faint flickers of light appearing in the gathering dusk. I rose hurriedly and found a Hobbit by my easel. He was looking thoughtfully into the nearby waters, where greenish flames meandered.

I followed his gaze and saw a form, like a pale corpse, just beneath the surface. The Hobbit turned toward me, nodded, then passed deeper into the marshes, whither I knew not in the gathering gloom.
