Artist Commentary: In Genesis (6:24), God places one of the cherubim with a flaming sword on the east side of the Garden of Eden. This in order to guard the way to the tree of life, lest fallen man eat also of that fruit. This image ended up being vaguely Byronic, I think, but often paintings take on lives of their own….

“Cartaphilus”
Oil on canvas, 10″x8″ wide.

Artist Commentary:  In medieval times, there were two tales circulating related to the “Wandering Jew”. In one, a Roman centurion who cuffed Christ on His way to Golgotha and told him to hurry was answered by Christ, “I will hurry, but you will stay here until I return.” As a result, that centurion was doomed to walk the earth, undying, until Christ’s second coming. A second tale concerns the apostle John and the passage in the New Testament that suggests that John will not die until Christ returns. This latter passage is referenced in this work by the title Cartaphilus, which means “dearly beloved”.

“St. Michael”

Artist Commentary: This is a western rendering of the archangel Michael, although his stance and his holding of the globe are somewhat iconographic, to say nothing of elvish. This image was first published in the July/August 2005 “Children’s Literature” issue of the St. Austin Review (StAR).
