The Counsel of Boromir

“The Counsel of Boromir

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday on the shores of Nen Hithoel, near the falls of Rauros. I had come to paint the falls, so, whilst seeking for a vantage point on this misty spring morning, I began climbing the Hill of the Eye.

The early morning sunlight streamed through the sparse green buds, turning the air golden. I found the stone stair that lies beneath the mold of countless autums, and that leads up the eastern slope to the very Seat of Seeing. Yet, I did not get far upon the stair before I discerned voices over the booming of the falls. And soon I descried through the mist a great warrior, seated on the stones, and a halfling, standing near him. They were in earnest conversation, and I did not wish to disturb them.

So, I did not continue to the brow of Amon Hen. Rather, I left the stair and wended my way south through the dewy undergrowth. But I wondered whence these odd companions had come, and what their doom might be this day….

Echoes on the Road

“Echoes on the Road

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday in the Green Hill country in the East Farthing. It was late in the day when I came to a stretch of road where the forest thickened; there the autumn colours were bright and cheerful in the afternoon light, and the birds sang merrily. I set up my easel beside an ancient oak tree and began to paint.

Before long, I heard happy voices, and soon three of the Small Folk appeared, packs on their backs, hiking east toward Stock and Woodhall; they greeted me warmly as they approached. But just ere they passed by, one of them turned around and listened. In a few moments we all heard them: echoes on the road — the clip clop of a horse’s hooves.

The Hobbits became anxious and they quickly hurried east. I likewise felt uneasy, so I hid myself behind the oak
tree and waited. Soon a cloaked man on a black steed passed by slowly, as if searching for someone in the woods. I held my breath as he passed, and he quickly vanished into the shadows of the eastern road. It was only then that I noticed the silence; all of the birds had likewise been affected by the passing of this apparition, and the were now hushed in the dwindling afternoon light.

Traveling East

“Traveling East

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday in the wild mountains of the east, hiking a shan shui landscape of vertiginous heights. The track I trod tripped lightly over the bones of the mountains, and as the mists of morning cleared, I descried below me a fair valley, glistering jewel-like in gauzy golden air.

Just then upon the path I espied a robed figure, staff bearing, climbing toward me. His hat was blue-banded,
and cerulean light glimmered from the top of his stave; I saw that the radiance issued from a great gem that glowed and flashed in the mountain air. The Sage nodded as he approached, and I asked him the name of the valley.

“Karningul, it once was called,” he replied, “but that was in ancient times. Few have ever found it, and none who do so, even in these dark days, depart from it unchanged.”

He would remark no further on the valley, but after bidding me farewell on my travels, passed by and was soon lost in the dark mists of the mountain pass.
