Out of Arnor

Out of Arnor”

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday in Eriador, riding the weather Hills. Although in Bree I had heard rumours of evil creeping back into these Wilds, I hoped to hike the ruins of this ancient place, and to paint, if I might, scenes that captured glints of the glory that was fallen Arnor.

As the gloaming fell, I sought a safe refuge, and espied in the distance the furtive flicker of flame; I cautiously led Brego to seek its source. There, beside a broken archway, I found two men: one older, grey bearded, and puffing on his pipe; the other, younger, but sterner of mien, lost in thought as he gazed into the bonfire that they had lighted.

I bid them good evening and stayed in their company until dawn, trusting that fell things would not trespass upon such doughty companions. And a merry evening it was among Elf-friends, despite the aching sorrow that steeped these ancient battlements.

Fledge

Fledgling”

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday traveling the remote wilds, many leagues west of the Great Waterfall and the cauldron pool. As the morning sun soared in a cerulean sky, I traversed forests and splendid grassy glades, and hiked the hills of divers downs. Then, near noon, I came upon a garden in a fair glen, walled about with green turves; in its eastern wall were set a pair of gates fashioned of purest gold.

Words in silver were blazoned upon those gates, but ere I could read them, a shadow passed over me. I looked aloft and spied a most astonishing sight: a winged horse, round the neck of which clung two children. This beatific being descended, and the boy and girl tumbled upon the grass. But I sensed that some solemn quest pressed upon the three, so I did not attempt to discover their errand. Instead, I turned to retrace my steps, seeking, if I might, to come nearer once more to the borders of Narnia ere nightfall.
