“Fog on the Barrow Downs”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.
Artist Commentary:
Brego and I left the Great East Road at dawn on Saturday, journeying southward across the Barrow Downs, and seeking the house of Goldberry and Tom Bombadil. I trusted that sunlight and fine weather would vouchsafe our passage, and I knew that unless untoward weather bewildered us, we should put the last of the frowning barrows behind us just as daylight faltered.
I was right, but just barely so.
The autumn sky was clear and cobalt blue, and the sunlight warm and gay. Around midday, we climbed a hill whose top was wide and flattened, and crossing it, we reached the single standing stone at its center.There we found four Hobbits feasting and merry-making in the noonday sun. We stayed with them briefly, then continued on our way.
At length, the sun began to sink into the west, and as it did so, I saw wisps and tendrils of fog forming in the hollows. I spurred Brego onward, and we left the downs behind us just as the sun set and the rank banks of fog closed in upon us. What became of the four little folk I knew not, but I hoped that they had not tarried overlong amidst the Barrows.
