The West Farthing

“The West Farthing”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: The West Farthing encompassed Hobbiton and the Hill, but it extended west to the moors that marched to the Blue Mountains and the Tower Hills. I wanted an image of this magical place that would resonate with those Hobbits among us….

The Road to Rivendell

“The Road to Rivendell”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I’ve always had a fondness for Bilbo, and thought that there might have been a number of times after he left the Shire that he found himself travelling, either alone or with Dwarves, on the road to Imlandris. I wanted an image that would capture the immensity of the mountains and the relative bleakness of that road, and this was what I came up with.

The Gates of Moria

“The Gates of Moria”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: The Fellowship was delayed at the western gate into the Dwarvish realm of Moria while Gandalf sought for the password that would open the doors into the mines.

Leviathan

“Leviathan”
Oil on canvas, 10″x16″ wide.

Artist Commentary: Leviathan was the name given by Psalms to the great sea monster that lived in the depths. In this image, I’m playing on the notion of what is most important to the viewer, particularly the male viewer, and asking what revelations might result from that question.

The Labyrinth

“The Labyrinth”
Oil on canvas, 8″x10″ wide.

Artist Commentary: In Greek mythology, the minotaur lived deep within a labyrinth that was devised by Daedalus. The maze was so clever that none who entered it (including the minotaur) could ever discover the way back out again. Here I’m asking about other labyrinths…those of our own devising. For these may prevent us from seeing a deeper reality all around us; one that can help us to realize the depths of the gifts and freedom that have been given us.
