A Conversation with Smaug

“A Conversation with Smaug”
Oil on canvas, 16″x10″ wide.

Artist Commentary: This is one of my favorite scenes from The Hobbit, when we first become acquainted with the infinitely wicked and yet polished dragon that haunts the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo (invisible of course) is in the lower right-hand corner of the painting.

The Black Rider

“The Black Rider”
Oil on canvas, 16″x10″ wide.

Artist Commentary: The Nazgûl are among the most creative of Tolkien’s creatures; there never has been anything quite like them, and they represent a bizarre blend of horror, fear, and pathos. They are forever doomed to seek the One Ring, and their enslavement to it is a direct result of their own sins. Yet, on some level, one wonders what they might have been like had they resisted their own Rings early on…if they had been able to counter their own failings and forego the lure of riches, power, and the control of others.

Barrel Rider

“Barrel Rider”
Oil on canvas, 16″x10″ wide.

Artist Commentary: Bilbo’s ride on the wine casks that were sent downstream by the wood elves in The Hobbit heralded the escape of Thorin Oakenshield and the remaining Dwarves from the wood Elves of Mirkwood. This nighttime ride is often depicted (even by JRRT himself) as being a dawn event, but it certainly wasn’t in the story.

Melkor

“Melkor”
Oil on canvas, 16″x10″ wide.

Artist Commentary: Melkor is the Lucifer figure in Tolkien’s The Silmarillionand Unfinished Tales. Once he chose not to serve Eru Ilúvatar and to defy those of the Valar who were servants of the Secret Fire, he became Morgoth, the outcast.

Enthouse

“Enthouse”
Oil on canvas, 16″x10″ wide.

Artist Commentary: There is no subject more difficult to tackle than Ents. Here, I’ve tried to concentrate on evening in Treebeard’s abode, with the two light sources, one green, one golden, with which he brightened his home late into the evening.
