“Smaug”

Artist Commentary: Smaug is almost always depicted guarding his hoard at the Lonely Mountain. Although I’ve done sketches of Smaug in flight, this is my first attempt to capture him in full colour. This image was first used on the cover ofAmon Hen No. 207 in September, 2007. Amon Hen is the bimonthly journal of the British Tolkien Society, and is ably edited by Andrew Butler.

“Dawn Treader”

Artist Commentary: This fairy tale image features a young girl sitting up in bed, apparently awakened by the light streaming down on her, or perhaps by the two peacocks who are in the tree above her. Her bed is seemingly in a wood, and it appears that the morning is breaking. What story is told by this wood and this child, I leave to the viewer to discover….

“Mallorn”

Artist Commentary: Lothlórien was the “City in the Trees”, and the only part of Middle-earth in which the great Mallorn trees grew until the high elves left Middle-earth. The trees were the home of the Galadhrim, or Silvan elves. They grew at the juncture of the rivers Celebrant and Anduin on the eastern side of the Misty Mountains.
