Armenelos the Golden

“Armenelos the Golden”
Oil on canvas, 14″x11″ wide.

Artist Commentary: Armenelos was the capital city of Númenor and was the site of the temple created by Sauron to corrupt the hearts of the Númenoreans. That temple belched the smoke of sacrifices to Morgoth in the corrupted late days of that kingdom. In this image, I’ve superimposed Armenelos, which was inland, with Romenna, which was on the coast. The resulting image is not geographically accurate, but is meant to capture the sense of power and foreboding of the waning days of Númenor.

The Tower Hills

“The Tower Hills”
Oil on canvas, 10″x16″ wide.

Artist Commentary: A series of steep hills stood at the west end of Eriador, west of the Shire. They lay about 30 Númenórean miles east of the Grey Havens, and upon them were built three Elven towers, one of which originally held one of the Númenórean seeing stones.

The Land of Gift

The Land of Gift”
Oil on canvas, 16″x10″ wide.

Artist Commentary: Númenor was the gift of Eru Ilúvatar and the Valar to the race of men at the close of the First Age. The island was set within sight of Elvenhome, and had a central peak, the Meneltarma, which was hallowed by the Númenóreans until their descent into darkness.

The Bridge Over Narog

The Bridge Over Narog”
Oil on canvas, 16″x10″ wide.

Artist Commentary: The river Narog rose from the Pools of Ivrin in the Ered Wethrin. Into its western bank was built the city of Nargothrond, stronghold of Finrod Felagund. Túrin Turambar persuaded the elves of Nargothrond to build a bridge over the river, and this led to its being vulnerable to the attack of Glaurung, who destroyed the city. This image was originally published as the cover ofAmon Hen number 193 in May of 2005.

At the Foot of the Meneltarma

“At the Foot of the Meneltarma”
Oil on canvas, 10″x16″ wide.

Artist Commentary: Meneltarma, meaning Pillar of the Heavens, was a sacred mountain in the centre of Númenor. At its summit, the King of Númenor uttered prayers of thanksgiving to Eru Ilúvatar. Although no permanent structures were built at its summit, in this image I’ve placed a pavilion on its upper slope…a place of gathering prior to ascent of the mountain itself. In the distance, the Evening Star is seen as the sun sets in the west. This image was originally published in Mallorn No. 42 in August, 2004.
