Artist Commentary: This is a semi-iconographic rendering of St. John the Baptist, called “The Forerunner” in the eastern church. St. John is often shown disheveled and with angels wings, emphasizing that, like the angels, he was a messenger of God.

The Bridge of Khazad-dûm

The Bridge of Khazad-dûm”
Oil on canvas, 16″x10″ wide.

Artist Commentary: The bridge leading from the eastern hall of the Dwarrowdelf (Moria) was created as a defensive structure. Only in single file could anyone cross the bridge, making its defense easy. This was the location of Gandalf’s battle with the Balrog of Morgoth.

Galadriel

“Galadriel”

Artist Commentary: Galadriel was the queen of the Silvan Elves of Lothlorien. She it was who aided the Fellowship on its quest after the fall of Gandalf, and who refused Frodo’s offer of the One Ring, thus saving herself and Middle-earth from the evil power it might have wielded through her.

Eowyn

“Eowyn”

Artist Commentary: This image was first published in the November/ December 2005 issue of the St. Austin Review (StAR). It depicts Eowyn, the sister-daughter of Theoden, king of Rohan. Eowyn desired more than anything to achieve glory in battle for her people. She feared nothing…except a cage.
