Treasure Bearer

Treasure Bearer”

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday in the East Farthing, rambling among the rollicking hills that lead from Hobbiton to the Brandywine bridge. The early summer breezes were brisk and the skies were stormy, but beams of sunlight dappled the landscape with bursts of green, russet, and gold.

I set up my easel beside the road, facing westward, and began to sketch the fields, roads, and distant purple hills that lead into the heart of the Shire. In the early afternoon, a cheerful hobbit dressed in a travel-stained cloak passed me by, leading a pony, heavily laden. He greeted me kindly and admired my work, then continued on his way, winding down the road toward The Water.

The Gaffer & the Ringwraith

The Gaffer & the Ringwraith”

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday in Hobbiton. The autumn air was crisp and cool, and the weather was perfect. As evening came, I hiked up Hobbiton Hill to view the sunset. The heavens blazed with swirling pink and cadmium clouds, and through them, the first of the evening stars spangled.

Whilst I sat upon the greensward, I descried a strange black horse and rider approach the cheery lights of the nearby Hobbit hole, and soon I heard the angry voice of the old Gaffer ring out in the evening air. I could not make out his words to the rider, but a chill ran through me, I know not why. Yet the interloper did not tarry, and soon peace returned to Bagshot Row.

Into the Wardrobe

Into the Wardrobe”

Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday hiking the Western Woods, following the Great River toward its source. It is winter yet in Narnia — always winter, and never Christmas — and I traveled warily, listening at all times for the sound of sleigh bells.

I turned aside from the stream just above the Beaver’s dam, hoping to find, in this frosty wood, the fabled lamp post that is ever aglow. And as the light failed, I soon espied a golden glimmer winking and blinking between the trunks of snow-laden trees.

It took me some time to reach the light through the deep drifts, and by then full nightfall was upon me. But, I was rewarded; whilst I gazed upon the surpassingly strange sight of a lighted gaslight in a frozen forest, I saw a movement out of the corner of my eye. I hid behind a hoary oak tree, and soon a young faun and a younger little girl entered the clearing, walking hand-in-hand.

The merry companions passed within a stone’s throw of my hiding place, and then they vanished; they melted away into a cobalt blue snowscape that stretched, seemingly without end, beyond the reach of the lantern’s golden glow.
