Fangorn Revisited

Fangorn Revisited”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I yesterday painted in Methedras, high above Wellinghall, where the chill spring waters of the Entwash bubble over the rocks and down into Fangorn Forest. Autumn has come early to the high places, and while I spread my palette with gold and crimson hues, an Elf and a Dwarf appeared. They stood at the falls and gazed long at the forest folds below, breathing the bracing air and savoring the singing of the springs.

In Her Father’s Garden

“In Her Father’s Garden”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday in the early morning mists of Imladris. I set my easel in Elrond’s garden, beside the lamp-lit bridge that spans lush flower-laden stream banks. The Misty Mountain peaks hung above trees and bushes bristling with blossoms of gold, white, and crimson. And as I painted, Elrond’s daughter came and stood before the bridge, deep in thought as the lamp lighting her path faded with the coming of the day.

Slayer of Darkness

Slayer of Darkness”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday in the eastern deserts beyond the Sea of Rhûn. Among eerie rocks and escarpments, I pitched my easel and awaited the sun’s setting. As the last orange rays brushed rocky heights, a solitary figure with a jewel-bedecked staff appeared along the path. He cast a longing look westward in the gloaming, and the blue crystal atop his staff blazed as darkness descended.

At the Carrock

“At the Carrock”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday on the Anduin. My easel I set at the crest of the Carrock and sought to capture the chromium and cobalt hues of the Misty Mountains. I paused mid-morning when thrush and jay ceased their singing, and turning, beheld an enormous bear ascend the rock. The great Ursid sniffed the air and scowled westward. A moment later he retraced his steps, forded the river, and vanished into the foggy foothills.

Mirkwood

“Mirkwood”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday painting in Rhovanion, in a northeastern nook of Mirkwood. A springtide squall had toppled trees, and the welcome sunlight seared the hoary trunks of ancient oaks. While I rendered the Elven path and the bluish haze, a sword-girt Hobbit passed by, bewildered by the brightness. He would not tarry, but dashed on into the darkness in pursuit of his Dwarvish companions.
