Edoras

“Edoras”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday in the Riddermark, in the valley of Harrowdale. I rode north from Edoras before dawn and set my easel on a dew-bejeweled swell above the windswept sea of grass . The White Mountains blushed lavendar in the early dawn light, and as the sun gilded the slopes of the Starkhorn, four figures on three swift mounts thundered past me and rushed on toward the walled city.

The Journey Home

The Journey Home”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday on the rocks near the Calacirya, painting the wild seas and craggy coasts of the Blessed Realm. While I worked, a ship with tattered sails emerged from the Enchanted Isles and glided in golden light towards Túna and the city of the Noldor. As she furled her sails, a beacon glinted from the crest of Taniquetil, crowning with light the snow-clad horn that rose above the mists of Aman’s shore.

Dawn at Lake-town

Dawn at Lake-town”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Monday morning at the edge of Long Lake. I was south of the studded span that tethers town to shore, with all of Esgaroth silhouetted before me by a quickening sky. Lamps spanned the calm waters and dappled distant dwellings; and as dawn approached, Bilbo bustled onto the beach and stood in wonder as purple, pink, and pearlescent hues heralded the coming of daybreak.

Troll Fells

Troll Fells”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I’m spending New Year’s Eve at the Troll fells; it seems a proper place for pondering the demise of a decade. Since time slips strangely through sub-created realms, a late May sun shines yet upon husky hills betwixt sodden spring squalls, while back home all is wasting winter. I find a footpath, made by I know not whom, and follow it to a rock overhung with underbrush. And just past this, I spy a heavy stone door….

Seat of Seeing

The Seat of Seeing”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday spent Saturday on Amon Hen, near the Seat of Seeing. It was stormy, but the clouds parted at midday and rivers of light poured through violet clouds, gilding the great lake below. I tried to capture all in oil: the dark forest below the hill’s brow, white birds flitting, and the ephemeral light on the distant shores.
