Chetwood

“Chetwood”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday in the Chetwood, east of Bree. Autumn’s palette is rich still among the hills that descend to Midgewater. I perched easel beside a stream that meanders through the crimson forests and sought to render the dawn. But Strider soon appeared, with four Hobbits in tow. They paused for a brief second breakfast, then hurried on their way, crossing the bridge and pressing on through gilded thickets….

Hobbiton

“Hobbiton”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I traveled Saturday with Mithrandir in the Shire. As the sun westered in an azure sky, we stopped at the bridge below Bag End. The Grey Wizard was in a reflective mood, and as the light turned golden and spangled trees, homes, and river, I set up my easel to sketch Hobbiton. Gandalf, sitting on the bridge while I worked, puffed thoughtfully on his pipe and pondered the lighting of the lamps and the advent of eventide.

The Fair Valley of Rivendell

“The Fair Valley of Rivendell”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday in Rivendell, below the falls that thunder beside the Last Homely House. The Bruinen feinted and fumed past my easel and palette and thin afternoon light gilded the House of Elrond. Above all, the crags and horns of the Hithaeglir leaped and bounded, ever higher, until they vanished in the murk and mists of approaching autumn.

Círdan

Círdan”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday at the Grey Havens. I set my easel by the stone quay and tried to render rainbow hues as the sun sank. With last light lingering beneath cuffed clouds, Círdan came to water’s edge and gazed long into the western gloaming…gleaning tidings, perhaps, from that realm which is forever hidden from mortal men.

The House of Tom Bombadil

“The House of Tom Bombadil”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Friday on the outskirts of the Old Forest. I’d promised to visit Tom Bombadil and Lady Goldberry before going to England later this week, and I arrived just as the stars were peeping out in the cool of the evening. It is still summer on the Downs, and Tom’s house nestles among thousands of crimson, gold, and white blossoms. The Withywindle springs and dances beside the house, welcoming all weary travellers…
