Helm’s Deep

“Helm’s Deep”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday in the Deeping-coomb riding across the valley and watching as Erkenbrand’s men fortified the Hornburg. As evening drew on, the sun blazed on Helm’s tower and the mountains surrounding Aglarond. The clouds and sky turned crimson then violet as light faded; those of us still outside quickly returned to the Keep as darkness fell…..

Radagast

“Radagast”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday in the land of the Beornings. The day was warm, but as twilight came a gilded Buck Moon arose over fields of corn. There I joined Radagast the Brown on his nightly pilgrimage through fen and field. Staff in hand, he allowed us to pause only to descry the soaring of starlings or to heed the rustlings of woodland beasts in deep brambles.

The Grey Company

“The Grey Company”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I am still recovering from a rendezvous with the Grey Company. They rode from Imladris with little rest for many days, halting only when their horses could go no further. We met and crossed the fords at Isen on Saturday evening, and the heavens were ablaze as we ascended the riverbank. The Rangers’ cloaks were black against the crimson sky and the silver stars on their breasts gleamed in the gathering gloom.

The Magic Ring

“The Magic Ring”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: This is the cover image for the new illustrated version of Baron La Motte de Fouqué’s masterpiece, The Magic Ring. This book will be released in March, 2010, by Valancourt Books, and the painting represents the two main protagonists, Bertha and Sir Otto, along with the Magic Ring itself, against a backdrop that suggests the epic adventures they encounter in this Gothic and chivalric romance.

Fouqué was an acknowledged influence on George MacDonald and William Morris, and the former was an influence on J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and the rest of the Inklings. The Magic Ring, then, representing one of the greatest of the German Romantic novels, tapped into those same themes that would later mark works such as Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia.

Legolas Comes to the Sea

“Legolas comes to the sea….”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday on the shores of Belfalas. The weather was stormy, but lavendar clouds relented as day waned. Legolas had come, finally, to the sea, and he stood long at water’s edge, watching gulls and harkening beyond the roar of wind and wave to melodies that none could hear but him.
