The Repentant Dragon

“The Repentant Dragon”
Oil on canvas, 16″x10″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I’ve always had a fondness for dragons. However, that fondness has always been tempered by the realization that, traditionally, dragons are always evil. Yet, it would seem that no living thing is entirely evil, so I’ve often wondered what it would take to bring a dragon to the point of repenting of its deeds and seeking to live a life devoted to the good, the true, and the beautiful….

The Window on the West

“The Window on the West”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: Henneth Annûn, also called the “Window of the Sunset”, or “Window on the West” was a hidden cave near the south road from the Black Gate of Mordor. Here the Ithilien rangers were based, and the cave, the waterfall that hid it, and the deep pool beneath it were constantly guarded against discovery by the agents of Sauron.

Messenger

“The Messenger”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: A stormy mountain landscape swirls behind a virgin in the wilderness. Behind her, a luminous figure with wings stands, awaiting her words….

This is only the second time I’ve attempted to render an image of the Annunciation, that most expectant and glorious event in human history.

The Grey Pilgrim”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday with Mithrandir walking the foothills of the Misty Mountains. The light was golden and it glowed on glade and glen, field and forest. We stopped to rest along the roadside and watched the sky turn from cerulean to violet as evening set in.

Haydee

“Haydee”
Oil on canvas, 14″x11″ wide.

Artist Commentary: This was a mystical piece that was, in part, inspired by the Princess Haydee from Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo. The image is metaphorical, and reflects the light of truth that surfaces in the text as the happenings in Janina come back to haunt the Comte de Morceuf.
