Vingilot

10_02_450_Vingilot_enh_800

“Vingilot”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I spent yesterday on the shores of Aman watching the waves wash up on the rocks. Vingilot was, for a time, at anchor near shore, and the afternoon light streaming through the Calacirya could not dim the brilliance of the ship with her silvered timbers….

Strider

10_02_449_Strider_enh_800“Strider”

Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: I just returned to full winter after yesterday’s Middle-earth trek with Strider through autumnal woods. Golden light poured down on us through cadmium leaves. We found a creek that crossed our path and stopped for bread and cheese and the heady wine of Imladris before wending our separate ways home….

Eowyn & the Witch King

Eowyn and the Witch King”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: Not an image for the faint of heart, this painting depicts the moment when the Witch King, astride his fell beast, has settled onto the carcass of Snowmane after the felling of Theoden King. Eowyn challenges the chief of the Nazgûl to battle, against all odds, and in seeming defiance of Glorfindel’s prophecy that “the hand of man” could never kill the Captain of the Nazgûl. In fact, of course, it is the hand of a woman and a Hobbit that ultimately lead to the Witch King’s ruin.

The Lonely Mountain

“The Lonely Mountain”
Oil on canvas, 21″x13″ wide.

Artist Commentary: After the feasting and celebration at Lake Town, Bilbo, Thorin and company proceeded by boat to the northern end of the lake, and thence on ponies into the wastelands of Smaug; these were the bleak and burned lands surrounding the Lonely Mountain.

In this painting, Bilbo and the Dwarves proceed north and east towards the Mountain as the sun is setting and the mists are rising from the lake….

Brandywine

“Brandywine”
Oil on canvas, 13″x21″ wide.

Artist Commentary: The Baranduin river (recast as “Brandywine” by the Hobbits who lived near it) separated Buckland from the rest of the Shire. It could only be crossed readily via the Brandywine Bridge and by Buckleberry Ferry.

In this painting we’re resting with Gandalf and Frodo on a rise overlooking the river. It is a summer’s day and although there are some high clouds, the scene is one of peace and leisure…a true Shire outing through the beautiful rolling hills.
