“Cair Paravel”

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday at the mouth of the Great River, gazing northward toward the castle on the sea. With autumn’s calm, the skies blushed roseate; turquoise waves wandered and evening mists melted the rocky shoreline. Flags fluttered atop the white towers of the keep as emerald waters lapped at my easel. A single gull flew past, and I raced to trace the fleet golden glimmer of the fair castle walls while sun set beyond the Western Wilds.

The Mage of Rhosgobel”

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday wandering the western eaves of Greenwood the Great. There thickets thin and knolls roll grassy green toward the lap of the roiling river. I set my easel beneath a drystone fence and sought to capture the windy crimsons and saffrons of hill and heath. And suddenly, four ravens came, perching on a nearby birch and proclaiming the Mage of Rhosgobel, who stayed his morning rounds just long enough to refill his pipe. Then, off he went, shepherding his sable subjects as purple plumes scudded across the western skies.

Woody End”

Artist Commentary: I arose early on Saturday and strolled beneath a star-strewn sky toward the Woody End. I left the lane and entered among the trees as predawn breezes bustled. On a grassy knoll I set my easel, and with autumn hues of maple, birch, and rowan emerging from the morning mists, a rider in black ascended the ridge before me. He hunched upon his horse, convulsing queerly as the light quickened, and then he descended into the darkened vale below. Reassured, the robins resumed their chorus, and the sunlight chased away all trace of the uncanny creature.

Artist Commentary: I spent Saturday at Mithlond on the Gulf of Lune. The skies beyond the sentinel cliffs were stormy, but the cadmiums and crimsons of the setting sun streamed through the breach. Emblazoned in the light, an elven sloop rode roiling waves as she approached the ancient havens. And high above, Eärendil sailed the skies; His crystalline light pierced scudding clouds as evening fell….

The Last Bridge”

Artist Commentary: I spent the evening upon the shores of the Hoarwell, east of Bree.The river’s banks were brimming from recent rains, and as I set my easel on the western shore, the full moon broke through the ragged clouds. Her pearly gaze softened the crags of the distant mountains and gilded the mists of sky and dale. I painted, and as darkness descended, a company of dwarves thundered across the Last Bridge and ascended the gauzy heights beyond, the echoes of their passage fading into the night.
