Treebeard

“Treebeard”
Oil on canvas, 16″x10″ wide.

Artist Commentary: Treebeard (or, in Sindarin, “Fangorn”) was the first Ent encountered in The Two Towers. In this rendering, I’ve put either Pippin or Merry (you get to decide) in conversation with the venerable “shepherds of trees”. I owe much of the original compositional conception to several works by Maxfield Parrish.

Shire Dreams

“Shire Dreams”
Oil on canvas, 10″x16″ wide.

Artist Commentary: The Shire is almost a paradise in The Lord of the Rings. Everything is as it should be there; machines are kept to a minimum, the people focus on relationships, good food, and simple pleasures. This is a typical lane in the ourskirts of the Shire, where hobbit holes line the grassy byways.

The Baptism of the Lord

“The Baptism of the Lord”
Oil on canvas, 14″x11″ wide.

Artist Commentary: This piece was one of a series commemorating the events of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary. The complete series is ongoing. In this image, Christ is immersed in the waters of Baptism, seemingly swooning in the currents as the lights of heaven play through the waters of the Jordan river. The “Fisher of Men” is surrounded by brightly coloured symbols of his ministry.

“The Dragon”
Oil on canvas, 10″x8″ wide.

Artist Commentary: “What fairy tales give the child is his first clear idea of the possible defeat of bogey. The baby has known the dragon intimately ever since he had an imagination. What the fairy tale provides for him is a St. George to kill the dragon.” – G.K. Chesterton
